Another skin care trend doing the rounds is skin rewilding. You may have heard of ‘rewilding’ in context with conservation and letting nature take care of itself. It’s about restoring and protecting natural processes to allow natural habitats to thrive, so how is this applied to skin care and is it worth the hype? We asked our Education Manager Victoria to explain this new trend.

What is skin rewilding?

This skin care trend is all about getting skin into a healthy natural state with a focus on skin barrier health. The #skinbarrier on TikTok has grown exponentially over the last year and a focus on restoring and protecting the skin’s barrier is a positive one. In the era of ‘actives’, many people have overprocessed their skin with use of retinoids and acids, leading to impaired barrier issues. Skin rewilding is the opposite of this obsession to push skin to the max by using minimal products that focus on barrier health.

Who is this trend good for?

Essentially anyone who has overdone it with their skin care and caused irritation or damage. If skin is all over the place and you’re struggling to keep it in check, sometimes going back to basics can help it recover and heal. We often do the opposite and throw everything at it in the hope of solving our skin concerns, but sometimes, less is more. Your skin barrier may be impaired by other factors including UV exposure, harsh climate, stress, or medications. If your skin is irritated, unpredictable, or sensitised, whatever the cause, it might be worth trying the skin rewilding approach.

How to incorporate skin rewilding in your regimen

Whilst rewilding in nature means very little intervention and letting nature take over, when it comes to skin, we need to use something to encourage its healthy function. Following this trend means eliminating your ‘active’ products such as retinoids, Vitamin C and hydroxy acids and keeping your daily regimen to a few products that focus on barrier restoration, hydration, and microbiome health. For best results, follow this simple regimen for at least 1-2 months to give skin time to rebalance.
