Do you currently have a skin care routine? Are you happy with it? Or are you unsure where to start? With so much information out there these days, it can be hard to know where to begin and what’s essential to include in your regimen.

At Dermalogica, we recommend 3 simple steps to help you achieve your healthiest skin yet.

  1. PREP
  2. TREAT
  3. GLOW

Yes, it really is that simple and easy to follow! Read on to learn the essential steps to include in your daily regimen.

How Important is a Skin Care Routine?

Our skin is the largest organ of our body, and it plays an important role in protecting us from things that could potentially cause us harm. Therefore, a skin care routine is vital, it ensures our skin is getting the protection it needs to maintain its health.

An easy way to understand the way our skin works is to think of it like a brick wall. Imagine your skin’s barrier is a brick wall; the bricks are the skin cells, and the cement is your barrier lipids (oils) that trap water. A careful balance of these components is needed to help keep your skin healthy and able to adequately defend. When the balance of our skin’s oil and water is out of whack, it can cause a cascade of negative effects such as dehydration, flakiness, sensitivity and breakouts.

How to Keep Your Skin Healthy

PREP

Skin Cleansing + Exfoliation

This is key to remove dirt, pollution or debris which could cause problems if left on the skin too long. At Dermalogica we have always advocated the double cleanse – using an oil-based cleanser followed by a skin specific cleanser.

You may wonder ‘why is one cleanse not enough?’ Put it this way: - you wouldn’t mop the floor before you sweep. So, the first cleanse removes the bulk of debris from the skin’s surface and the second cleanse effectively cleans the skin.

Cleanse first with an oil-based cleanser, such as our PreCleanse oil. Oil-based cleansers melt through and completely remove what’s sitting on the skin. They are also highly effective at lifting away make up, ensuring a nice clean canvas for rest of your skincare. Your second cleanse can tackle any specific skin concerns, such as breakouts, oiliness, dry skin, or sensitivity whilst removing any last remaining debris.

We have a variety of different cleansers to match every skin need.

Exfoliating your skin

Once we have thoroughly cleansed our skin, we must remove any dry dead skin cells via exfoliation. This plays a vital role in keeping our skin healthy. If we don’t regularly exfoliate our skin, it can become dry in texture, appear dull, get congested and may become sensitive. This could also prevent other products from penetrating the skin effectively.

We recommend regular exfoliation to encourage the natural skin renewal process to maintain healthy skin and tackle concerns such as dryness, ageing, uneven skin tone and breakouts.

Dermalogica has both daily and weekly exfoliation products so, depending on your skin’s needs or how much time you have, there’s a solution for you.  If you’re not sure what to choose,  book a free Facemapping consultation with one of our expert skin therapists to find your match.

TREAT

Face Serums + Targeted Treatments

This is where we incorporate ingredients to layer hydration and target specific skin concerns such as breakouts, pigmentation or fine lines and wrinkles. This can be achieved with toners and serums, either layered or patch worked on the skin.

Why should you use a toner?

Toners are an important part of a skin regimen, as they add vital moisture to the skin. Check out our spritz toners which can even be applied over makeup to refresh the skin throughout the day. They also help to balance the skin’s natural acidic ph. They do not contain SD alcohol, so won’t dry, or strip the skin like some traditional toners used with cotton pads. Dermalogica toners and mists are designed to layer under serums and moisturisers to increase product absorption by the skin and help your products to go further.

Using Skin Serums

A face serum is another fantastic addition to your skincare regimen, to help target your key concerns by delivering concentrated levels of active ingredients deep into the skin.

GLOW

Hydrating Through Moisturising

To achieve your healthy glow, skin needs to be hydrated and protected from the elements. During the day, our skin is in ‘protect and defence’ mode and at night it will heal and repair. A moisturiser will help support these functions.

Protect your skin during the day with a moisturiser containing a broad-spectrum Sun Protection Factor (SPF). We have moisturisers with built in SPF for a range of skin conditions, all with comfortable textures and non-pore clogging formulas.

Protecting Your Skin

During the day we advise defending your skin from UV exposure by wearing a broad Sun Protection Factor (SPF). We have moisturisers with built in SPF for a range of skin conditions, all with comfortable textures and non-pore clogging formulas.

Overnight Skincare

During the night we can help our skin heal and repair. If you have trouble sleeping, it can negatively impact your skin’s repair processes. Check out our amazing Sound Sleep Cocoon night-time moisturiser with encapsulated lavender to help you get a restful night’s sleep.
